Fit then becomes part of fluid control. A loose leg opening can leave space for liquid to bypass the absorbent zone, while excessive elastic tension can create pressure during long wear. Period underwear should therefore be fitted as a functional garment, not graded as ordinary fashion underwear with an absorbent panel added later. In a U.S. cohort published in 2025, regular period-underwear use was reported by 20% of participants, but use varied by age: 17% among people under 20 compared with 22% among those aged 30–39. Brands can use an agreed wash protocol when comparing dimensional change, elastic recovery, seam condition, delamination, and absorbency after repeated laundering. Without a fixed laundering method, results from two suppliers are difficult to compare.

Repeated washing should also influence how the gusset is assembled. Bonded membranes, laminated layers, stitched edges, and elastic attachments can age differently, so testing only a new sample gives limited information about long-term wear. A practical private label program can record measurements before washing, after several early cycles, and again at a later agreed cycle count. Even a 3%–5% dimensional change can be noticeable in a close-fitting underwear product because the absorbent panel needs to stay aligned with the body.

Material compliance deserves equal attention because period underwear has long skin contact. Buyers supplying the U.S., UK, EU, Australia, or Canada should define restricted-substance requirements before fabric booking rather than after production. Requirements can differ by destination, retailer, material, and claim, so the purchase specification should identify the applicable chemical standard, testing scope, and document version. If a brand requests PFAS-related screening or additional restricted-substance testing, the requested analytical method and reporting limit should be stated rather than using a broad “PFAS-free” instruction with no test basis.

One product family may also serve customers outside menstrual use. A factory that already works with absorbent gussets, leak-resistant membranes, elastic control, and washable constructions may develop adjacent products such as incontinence underwear, but urinary leakage and menstrual flow should not be treated as technically identical. Private label brands can reduce development complexity by sharing approved components across several styles. One absorbent construction might be used in a bikini and high-rise brief, while a longer version serves overnight products. The body fabric, waistband, label system, or packaging format can also be shared where performance allows. A range with 3 absorbency levels, 3 silhouettes, and 4 colors can theoretically create 36 combinations, yet a brand does not need to launch all 36. Selecting 8–12 well-defined SKUs can provide meaningful choice without multiplying material minimums and inventory.

Supplier evaluation should therefore move beyond sample appearance. A useful development file records material composition, fabric GSM, stretch and recovery, gusset dimensions, layer order, seam type, absorbency method, wash protocol, size tolerances, inspection level, packaging specification, and revision history. For reusable garments, ISO 6330:2021 is especially relevant because each defined washing procedure represents one domestic wash and a complete test combines washing with a specified drying procedure. Changing detergent, machine type, or tumble-drying conditions can change test results, so the agreed method belongs in the technical package.

Wear testing adds information that bench measurements cannot provide. When capacity, fit, materials, laundering, sizing, and claims are recorded with testable limits, one manufacturer can build several customer-focused products without turning every SKU into a completely separate development project.
